Flame retardants
Aluminium hydroxide
Aluminium hydroxide is a non-toxic filler and can be used as a flame retardant and for smoke reduction. The Reflamal and Addforce FR types have a pH value of 7 – 9 in aqueous suspension. They are available on the market in various grain sizes. Due to its Mohs hardness of 2.5 – 3.0, the use of Reflamal and Addforce FR types is unproblematic even in highly filled systems. Reflamal and Addforce FR grades are used in thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers, among others – in applications where the processing temperature of 200 °C is not exceeded.
Reflamal
The reflamal types are ground aluminium hydroxide, which is available in different particle size distributions. These are halogen-free, physically harmless and flame-retardant fillers that are used in the following areas:
- Thermosets such as unsaturated polyester resins or epoxy resins
- Thermoplastics such as polyolefins or PVC
- Elastomers such as NBR, SBR or EPDM
Addforce FR
The Addforce FR grades based on aluminium hydroxide are aluminium hydroxide specialities. They are ground and surface-treated, making them suitable for use as flame retardants. The special surface treatment improves the processing, especially the compounding into the polymer matrix. In addition, these products are characterised by improved flowability.
The Addforce FR grades are non-corrosive and non-volatile flame retardants. In case of fire, these products can reduce smoke density. Due to their interiority, they can be used in many applications.

Ammoniumpolyphosphat
Halogen-free fire retardants with intumescent character for coatings and plastics (such as EVA or PE) processed at medium temperatures.
Addforce FR APP products belong to the ammonium polyphosphates. These are halogen-free flame retardants based on inorganic salts consisting of phosphoric acid and ammonia. Addforce FR ammonium polyphosphates are used, among other things, as intumescent coatings. Addforce FR ammonium polyphosphates can also be found in PU applications such as PU foams and in thermoplastics, adhesives and sealants, PP copolymers, PP blends, cellulose-containing materials, unsaturated polyester, phenolic and epoxy resins, as well as in textile finishing or in the electronics sector. Materials that are flame-retardant with Addforce FR APP form a voluminous and insulating protective layer by charring at high temperatures.
The Addforce FR APP series offers a wide range of ammonium polyphosphates that can be used as an efficient flame retardant in various fields. Addforce FR ammonium polyphosphates are available in liquid or powder form. Due to the different degrees of polymerisation and different surface coatings, the Addforce FR APP products are individually designed for the market.

Expanded graphite
Addforce FR EG is a halogen-free and environmentally compatible fire protection additive. The flame-retardant effect of the product is based on swelling and carbonisation of the appropriately finished material. Expanded graphite is made from naturally occurring graphite. They are halogen-free fire retardants used in a range of applications such as PUR padding, roofing membranes, sealants or coatings. The flame-retardant effect is based on the fact that its volume expands many times over when exposed to heat. The formation of an intumescent layer protects the polymer and slows down the expansion of the fire.

Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE)
The Addforce Mod series belongs to the impact modifiers that find their field of application in the PVC sector. It is chlorinated polyethylene – partly with improved pourability. In particular, our Addforce Mod 135A125 and our Addforce Mod 135A125X can easily be delivered in silo trucks due to their good flowability. The impact modifiers for the PVC range have a standard CL content of around 36%.
Furthermore, CM grades are available for use in elastomers and cable applications. The Addforce Mod grades have good weather and chemical resistance.
In addition to the pure CPE grades, impact modifiers combining the advantages of acrylates and chlorinated polyethylene are also available, especially for PVC window profiles. This means that the ever-increasing demands of PVC customers for cost and performance improvements can be optimally met.

Melamine derivatives
Fire retardants based on melamine derivatives for the fire-retardant/self-extinguishing finishing of plastics
Halogen-free melamine-based fire retardants (M-cyanurate, M-phosphate and M-borate) for the appropriate finishing of filled and unfilled polymers (plastics and rubber) as well as coatings and for smoke reduction. Melamine borate can be used in PVC as a synergist for antimony trioxide. Furthermore, melamine borate will also be used in these areas for the reduction of flue gas.
Melamine cyanurate (MC)
Melamine cyanurate is used as a halogen-free flame retardant in a number of polymers. The main polymers are polyamides (PA6.6 and PA6), where melamine cyanurate can be used as the sole additive or in combination with other FR additives. Melamine cyanurate shows good tensile strength properties and a significant increase in tensile modulus.
Melamine borate (MB)
Melamine borate is used to reduce fumes in many polymers. Melamine borate is equipped with high thermal stability and does not interact with standard processing additives: stabilisers, processing aids, cross-linking agents, inorganic fillers or pigments.
Melamine phosphate (MP)
Melamine phosphate is a salt of melamine and phosphoric acid. Under high temperatures, endothermic decomposition occurs, which leads to heat reduction and cooling of the polymer and the surface. Melamine phosphate can be used in thermoplastics, polyolefins, elastomers, engineering resins, paints and fire retardant intumescent coatings. In some fields of application, it can partially replace ammonium polyphosphates.
Melamine polyphosphate (MPP)
Melamine polyphosphate is a salt of melamine and phosphoric acid with a high nitrogen content. It belongs to the group of halogen-free flame retardants and has a wide range of applications – it is used, among other things, in polyamides but also for coatings. The white powder can also be optimally incorporated into PUR and the balanced nitrogen and phosphorus distribution makes this an effective protection for plastics.

Red phosphorus
Halogen-free fire retardants based on red phosphorus for fire-retardant/self-extinguishing finishing of plastics
MasteretTM products are concentrates of red phosphorus supported on various polymers. The MasteretTM products are very effective flame retardants even at low concentrations. The fine particles are coated on the surface and thus protected against oxidation and additionally microencapsulated. In this way, the phosphorus is phlegmatised, i.e. it is converted into a more reactive version. The production is carried out by means of a specially adapted processing method in order to maintain the qualities and/or chemo-technical properties of the red phosphorus without restriction in the masterbatch.
MasteretTM is the simplest and safest way for plastics and rubber processors to benefit from the disadvantages of using red phosphorus as a fire retardant in appropriate applications.
- Easy handling, improved industrial hygiene, safer and harmless to handle
- No additional investment in dosing and protection of the processing plant
- Improvement of the end products through easy dosing and improved dispersion as well as compatibility of the red phosphorus in the polymer
- Significant reduction in the maintenance and cleaning requirements of both the dosing equipment and the extruder lines
- No restrictions during transport and storage
MasteretTM grades are dust-free, free-flowing, relatively inert materials. The MasteretTM grades contain homogeneously dispersed red phosphorus in the polymer matrix with a dosing accuracy of the active ingredient of no more than ±1% compared to the specified target concentration. The products are non-corrosive in use and do not cause C-deposits in hot runner spray processes. MasteretTM products are non-flammable and equally safe as the respective carrier material used. The red phosphorus phlegmatised in this way is incorporated into a suitable carrier material with different active ingredient contents, usually 50-70%.
In this way, free-flowing, easy-to-dose granulates are produced for simplified incorporation in polyolefins or engineering plastics. MasteretTM grades are also available as dispersions for PU or epoxy systems in polyols or bisphenols. It is also possible to produce aqueous dispersions in this way, for example for latex or textile applications.

White phosphorus-based proprietary compound
Phosphorus-based fire retardants for the fire-retardant/self-extinguishing finish of plastics
The products are an inorganic mixture of phosphorus compounds and synergists. The PhosliteTM products are halogen-free, highly effective FR additives with a high phosphorus content. PhosliteTM is thermally very stable and compatible with most polymers. These FR additives based on inorganic phopshinate have the advantage over the red phosphorus-based fire retardants that one is no longer colour-bound. The synergistic effect of PhosliteTM products is great and similar in several ways to the well-known red phosphorus. The new products are non-toxic and fully colourable, allowing PhosliteTM to be used in thermoplastics.
PhosliteTM is adapted to the respective areas of requirement and is highly effective in small additional quantities in the respective polymers. PhosliteTM products are available with low halogen content or halogen-free. Depending on the area of application, it is possible to achieve the UL94 V2 standard even with small additions.
Mainly developed for polypropylene applications, PhosliteTM products can achieve UL94 V2 in PP. PhosliteTM products are manufactured using a newly developed technology so that temperature-resistant phosphate salts can be used as flame retardants. PhosliteTM can be used independently or in combination with the known flame retardants. The advantages are a very low halogen or additive content, high process reliability, colour stability and compatibility.
PhosliteTM B631C/ B630C/ B630CF is suitable for finishing polypropylene and HDPE. Phoslite B631C is a white, fine powder that complies with the UL94 V2 standard even in very small additional quantities in PP homopolymer and PP copolymer as well as in HDPE. It does not deteriorate the material characteristics of the polymer. In PP copolymer, the PE content should not be higher than 20-25 %. These products are not recommended for metallocene HDPE.
The new PhosliteTM products (EXP PP/35, EXP PP/36 and EXP PP/37) achieve UL94V0 (1.6 mm) for PP homopolymer without anti-dripping agent, with addition of 25% recommended. The new Phoslite products are the most efficient halogen-free flame retardant system developed for use in polyolefins. The new Phoslite products are based on phosphorus, nitrogen and other inorganic components.
